Karangsambung, an area of rock outcrops that tells a long story about the earth’s dynamic processes. It is about 19 km from the city of Kebumen. If you use a four-wheeled vehicle, it will take approximately 30 minutes to travel from Kebumen train station. Along the journey from Kebumen to Karangsambung, the views of rice fields and rows of hills make a special impression. Not to mention the flow of water from the Luk Ulo River which snakes like a big snake.
Karangsambung is the destination of the ITB Geophysical Engineering excursion (field study), and is a routine annual agenda. Apart from Geophysical Engineering students, the Karangsambung vehicle is also regularly visited by Geological Engineering and Mining Exploration students. Every year more than 200 students come to Karangsambung, both from Java and outside Java. Plus several lecturers and assistants who accompany the students.
For 12 days (10 – 22 April 2018) Geophysical Engineering-ITB students were quarantined at the LIPI Karangsambung campus. Field study days are filled with outdoor activities and in class during evening lectures. Of course, don’t forget the daily report book which must be submitted periodically to the assistant.
In general, the 2018 ITB Geophysical Engineering field course is divided into 2 sessions, namely the geology session and the geophysics session. In the geology session, participants were provided with information about geological equipment and how to use it. Geological equipment commonly used in the field such as geological hammers, geological compasses and lugs.
Meanwhile for the geophysics session, students are trained to be skilled at using several geophysical equipment in the Karangsambung field. The equipment used is gravity, georadar, EM and seismic refraction.
