Karangsambung Field Lecture 2017: Application of Four Geophysical Methods
Karangsambung, Kebumen – A series of field lecture activities discussing the geology of the Karangsambung area ended on Sunday (14/05/17). Within the first week, participants were invited to observe and map the geology of Karangsambung in more depth. This is done as a reference in carrying out data acquisition activities which will be carried out the following week. There were at least four geophysical methods applied by the participants. Among them are the magnetic method, gravity method, geoelectric method, and seismic refraction method.
The implementation of field data acquisition itself was divided into eight small groups consisting of around 11 people with trajectories spread throughout the geological observation area. This data acquisition activity was carried out over four days (15 May – 18 May 2017) with one method being divided into two groups each day.
In contrast to the magnetic method or gravity method, the geoelectric method and seismic refraction method are not carried out spread out over the geological observation area. Specifically for the geoelectric method, the measurement track is located around the LIPI Karangsambung campus. Meanwhile, with the gravity method, the track stretches for approximately one kilometer along the Karangsambung highway, to be precise to the south of the LIPI Karangsambung campus. “Congested traffic is still one of the main obstacles to implementing seismic data acquisition because it is necessary to open and close roads. Especially on Thursdays, which is the shock market schedule here.” said Mr Dedi as the technician in charge of handling all the equipment used in acquisition activities.
In general, field data acquisition activities begin at eight in the morning and participants are required to arrive back at the LIPI campus at a maximum of 17.00 WIB. Next, the activity is filled with assistance according to the acquisition method carried out that day. Every day, each group is required to send processing reports and temporary acquisition reports at a maximum of 21.00 WIB. After that, each group will be given a briefing regarding the acquisition method that will be carried out the next day.
On Thursday (18/05/17), Prof Satria Bijaksana announced the best participants from each small group. “The eight selected people will later represent their respective groups to present the results of their group’s acquisitions. The three best participants will be announced at the closing of this Karangsambung field lecture.” closed Prof Satria.
