HM Geophysical Engineering ITB “TERRA” General Champion of IUGC 2016 (2016 Indonesian Geophysics Undergraduate Competition)

IUGC (Indonesian Undergraduate Geophysics Competition) 2016 is an Indonesian geophysics competition event organized by the Geophysical Engineering Student Association “TERRA” ITB. IUGC 2016 consists of several series of events, including pre-event (photo contest, paper competition, essay competition), seminar, main competition, expo, field trip, and closing in the form of a gala dinner. The IUGC 2016 series of events took place on 14 – 18 November 2016. IUGC 2016 raised the theme Geophysics Stands Up to the World’s Challenges. It is hoped that IUGC 2016 will be able to improve the professionalism and knowledge of participants to face the challenges the world of geophysics currently faces.

The 2016 IUGC main competition consists of GSDC (geophysical survey design competition), GPC (geophysical processing competition), and GIC (geophysical interpretation competition). The 2016 IUGC main competition was attended by 9 universities in Indonesia, namely ITB, UI, UNPAD, UGM, UPN, UNDIP, UB, UNEJ, UNILA. Each university sent a contingent consisting of 6 people (2 people for GSDC, 1 person GPC, 3 people GIC).

Each competition in the main competition is divided into 2 sessions, preliminary and final sessions. At the GSDC preliminaries, participants were asked to create a geophysical data acquisition plan with the exploration targets that would be given. The five participants with the highest scores will take part in the final round, and will present the exploratory survey design on the questions in front of the jury and audience.

In the GPC preliminaries, participants are asked to carry out data processing using several methods such as gravity, magnetic, electromagnetic, seismic and geoelectric which aim to increase the resolution of geophysical data using the programming language that the participants are best at. The five participants with the highest scores will take part in the final round and present the results of their data processing and analysis.

In the GIC preliminaries, the system used is a quiz, participants will be tested on their basic knowledge of all aspects related to the interpretation of geophysical data. The quizzes were divided into 3 groups from the 9 existing contingents. The six best participants from the preliminary round entered the final round to analyze and interpret a geophysical and geological cross-section of the given case.

The questions and judges faced came from related companies such as Pertamina (in the case of hydrocarbons), Antam (mining), Star Energy (geothermal), and several lecturers from ITB Geophysical Engineering. From the 3 competitions in the main competition, the winners emerged as follows. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners from GSDC (survey design) were UNPAD, UB, ITB respectively. Meanwhile for the GPC (processing) competition, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners were ITB, UGM, UB respectively. For the GIC (interpretation) competition, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners were ITB, UI, UB respectively. With this, ITB emerged as the overall champion and retained the rotating trophy previously won by ITB. The total prize awarded is IDR. 20,000,000.00.
