History of the ITB Geophysics Engineering Study Program

Geophysics Engineering ITB is the first geophysical engineering study program in Indonesia. Learning about the science of geophysics has been carried out in various departments of ITB long before this study program was established, namely starting around the 1980s. However, the new geophysical engineering study program stood alone as a department starting in 2005 according to the ITB Chancellor’s Decree No. 222/SK/K01/OT/2005 under the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Mineral Technology (FIKTM) which has now changed to FTTM. The formation of this study program is also a forum for scientific study of geophysics which was previously divided into various departments at ITB. The background to the establishment of this study program was the national need for geophysicists in the earth resource exploration industry and also in the mitigation of natural and environmental disasters. At the beginning of its formation, geophysical scientific activities were only focused on resource exploration. Currently, the geophysical engineering study program has developed into three groups of expertise namely Applied and Exploration Geophysics, Global Geophysics and Exploration and Engineering Seismology.

ITB Geophysics Engineering Study Program Profile

In accordance with the national standards of higher education in Indonesia, every graduate of the applied geophysical engineering undergraduate program is expected to be able to have skills including the following:

  1. Able to apply critical, logical, systematic and innovative thinking in the context of scientific development according to their field of expertise.
  2. Be able to study the implications of developing geophysical technology based on scientific principles, procedures and ethics in providing solutions to problems in the field of expertise geophysics based on the results of analysis and information or data.
  3. Able to be responsible for the achievement of the work results of the supervision group and evaluate the completion of assigned work.
Graduates of geophysical engineering are expected to be able to become prospective experts who are able to apply geophysical knowledge in the world of work related to their expertise. A geophysical engineering graduate is expected to be able to work in the exploration of natural resources such as oil and gas, minerals and also in the field of disaster mitigation such as earthquakes etc.

Advisory Board

Geophysical Engineering is continuously improving the curriculum and academic environment of bachelor, master and doctoral degree through advisory boards. The advisory boards are selected to represent various sectors of geophysics from academic, government institution and industry.
