The Guardian x Rescue Team from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) conducted a real-life action activity at the tip of the Selayar Islands, specifically on Madu and Karumpa Islands, on September 7-9, 2025. The lecturers involved in the trip were lecturers from the Oceanography Study Program (Dr. rer.nat Rima Rachmayani and Karina Aprilia Sujatmiko, Ph.D.) and the Geodesy-Geomatics Study Program (Gabriella Alodia, Ph.D.), in collaboration with the local government, represented by staff from the Selayar Regency Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Service, Ms. Hasry, S.Pi., and one of the speakers from Brawijaya University (Ms. Dewa Ayu Putu Eva Wishanti, Ph.D.).<\/span><\/span> However, this community service program was also initiated by Dr. Eng.<\/span><\/span> Faruq Khadami and Brian Bramanto, Ph.D., who were unable to sail with us.<\/span><\/span> Student assistants consisted of students from the Oceanography Study Program at ITB and students from Hasanuddin University, Makassar.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

The purpose of this activity was to provide education regarding marine resources and potential disasters to all groups, including elementary and junior high school students, as well as the general public.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

This is due to Madu Island and Karumpa Island’s proximity to earthquake sources and the potential for tsunamis, which they experienced in 1992 and 2021.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The following day, the activity focused on elementary and junior high school students through interactive learning about the ocean, simple practices related to marine phenomena, and disaster mitigation efforts.<\/span><\/span> This activity concluded the Guardian x Rescue team’s activities on Karumpa Island.<\/span><\/span> In the afternoon, the group returned to Kawawu Harbor to spend the night before departing home on the Sabuk Nusantara ship early the next morning.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
